We're so glad you are here to learn how you can have a simple, but very meaningful Lent with your family by reading with us.

Inviting Families to Read Aloud Together this Lent

WE want to help families restart, begin, or continue the habit of reading aloud.   About 10 years ago there was a movement that caught on like wildfire--the read aloud revival.  Everyone with children during that time period tried to start to read aloud to their children.  And it wasn't just to young children who couldn't read, it was for family members of all ages. It was wonderful.  Families were sitting down together in the evening and listening as a parent or older child would read.

From our perspective,  we've seen this fad, well, fade. We've not heard of too many families still doing this.

During this time of screens and social media for all of us, parents included, it seems like a good, old-fashioned read aloud might be just what many families need.   And what better time to do this than during Lent.

We know what you are thinking--yes, Lent, that's a great time to enter a time of slow suffering and complete boredom that reading aloud can be.  But we think you'll find it just the opposite.

Sure, it may be slow.  And Sure, you may find that it will take a few sacrifices and commitment to pull it off, but it will be anything but boring!  Your family will come alive as you engage in the story and discuss the events together.

How Will This Work?

We wanted to make this as easy as possible for busy families.

We will send out an email every Saturday through Lent.  It will contain a reading plan for the week.  We will send out a suggested 30 minute section.  You can do your 30 minutes in one setting(like on Sunday evenings), or split into 2 or 3 reading times through the week.  Suggested sections of about 10 minutes each will be offered. We will also offer some discussion questions to be done after the reading is completed for the week.  These can be done as a separate time, or after the last reading, or even during dinner that week.

We know finding the time to do this is challenging for all families, but it will be a memorable experience and one that will help Lent to stand out this year.  It will be worth your effort!

Why The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe? (LWW)

This book is absolutely one of the best stories to read with your family during Lent.  Here's why:

  • Through the story of the children confronting Aslan's death, we are moved, almost to tears.  It helps us relate to the death and crucifixion of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, which has become so distant and even commonplace.
  • There are other lessons of family loyalty and betrayal which will be interesting to discuss with one's own family.
  • And discuss  and try to understand why Aslan/Jesus had to die?
  • Hope and final triumph are illustrated so beautifully.
  • Finally, even though these concepts seem heavy and deep, the story is fun and engaging for the whole family, regardless of one's age.
  • And it's fairly short.  We'll get through the whole book in less than 30 minutes a week during Lent.
